Indigenous Wisdom
Stone Essence
Definition:
The living wisdom of all indigenous peoples.
A practical, feet-on-the-ground, present-tense wisdom.
Anchored in the Earth, grounded in practicality, an alive,
experiential wisdom. (Made from a stone that looks like
pounamu).
(See below for details of pounamu.)
A sea essence, made from a stone found on the beach between
Paekakariki and Raumati South, on 4 September, 1999.
Over the winter and spring of 1999, from April to November, I lived
in a little house by the sea at Raumati South, on the coast north of
Wellington, New Zealand's capital city. Most days, I walked on the
beach, and this is one of the many special stones that I found on
this beach during those long walks.
This stone, especially when wet, looks very much like a piece of
pounamu, though this has not shown in the photographs on this
page (the photos are over-exposed). Pounamu, also known as
“Greenstone”, is a form of green jade found in New Zealand,
and has spiritual significance to the Mãori people of New Zealand.
There is also an essence made from pounamu.
