Scotch Thistle
Flower Essence
Cirsium valgare
Definition:
“The rose amongst the thorns.”
For people who feel out of place,
and don’t know what to do about it.
Examples: a female among males;
a man among lesbians (not a woman
among gay men); immigrants; an
“out of time” person who is stuck in
a past era.
A flower essence, made 8 February, 1998, from the flower-heads
from some very healthy scotch thistle plants growing
in the garden at the Buchanan
Street, Wadestown, property where I lived at the time.
The scotch thistle has always fascinated me. It is such a tough,
hardy plant. It is a prolific weed, and, in order to pull it
out, gardeners have to wear thick gloves to insulate their hands
from the very sharp prickles.
The flower-heads, while being encased in the same very tough
prickles that are on the leaves, are, in my opinion, a beautiful
flower. And, if you break open a flower head, inside you
find a delicate and soft mass of flesh.
This plant truly does have two aspects to it....
the tough, “thorny” image, protecting itself from grazing
animals (and from gardeners!), and the lovely, soft, beautiful
flower.... the “rose” set amongst all those prickly thorns.
The flower essence from this plant, along with the
Pinus radiata
is a key essence in both the
