Peter Archer - the modern-day alchemist, in the footsteps of Dr Edward Bach.

A Modern Day Alchemist

Part Two

Disappointment on the job front, but, an opportunity
to follow up on my interest in the flower essences....

Very soon after arriving in Wellington, I saw a notice on a notice-board.....

“Flower Essence Workshop, with Mary Garbely”

Peter posing for his C.V. photo in May 1992. I did not hesitate for one moment.  That same evening, I called the number on the notice, spoke to someone called Lisa, and booked a place for myself in the workshop, which was held on 4th and 5th July, 1992, the first day at the Reiki Center in Berhampore, and the second day at “Turnbull House” in the heart of Wellington City, in Bowen Street, right opposite parliament.

Mary, seen here at the Flower Essence Celebration, September 1995. Sitting in the workshop with about twenty women (I think I was the only man who attended), I was totally inspired by Mary.  Everything she said made total sense to me.  If it is true that the real meaning of the word “education” is to “draw out that which is already there inside the student”, then that is exactly what I experienced for those two days with Mary.  It was like everything that she told us was something that I already knew and just needed reminding of.

Essences being made in the sun. I especially remember Mary telling us how to make an essence, by placing the flowers on water and exposing them to the sun.  As she explained, in her natural, easy to understand, way; I instantly knew that one day I would definitely be making flower essences.  I felt the energy of this very deeply, and as she was telling us to use a plain crystal wine glass, clear glass with no markings, I thought  “Yes, of course!”

At the end of the second day, I knew all about flower essences.  How to make them, how to use them, how to intuitively diagnose for which essences are needed  (Mary even taught us how to use a pendulum):  in short, everything about the basics of making and using flower essences.

Mary's little book, that started it all for me. Mary had a supply of her little book with her that weekend, the same one that I had found in the Nelson Public Library, and which had so captivated me.  I bought my own personal copy from her, which she kindly signed for me, and this book became my “Bible” for the next few years.

Wanting to immediately begin using the essences, and not feeling quite ready to buy a kit of the stock bottles myself, I asked Mary if she would make me up a mixture of the essences, and over the next few months I was to have several of these treatments from her.  It became part of my daily routine to take my essences every morning, once or twice during the day, and at bedtime when getting into bed.

During this time of my life, in 1992, I was very unhappy, and Mary's essences were one of the things that helped get me through these difficult times.  I especially remember the bedtime routine, taking the dose of essences sitting up in bed, and I was sure that I could feel the healing energy contained within this “magic potion”, and this bedtime routine became like a “sacred ritual” for me.

With every essence mixture that Mary sent me, she supplied a hand-written list of the essences that were in the mixture, with a brief summary of what each essence was for.  I would look each of them up in her book, and avidly study the details of them.

This ongoing essence treatment went on for all the remainder of 1992, and into the beginning of 1993.  In March of 1993, Mary came back to Wellington and did another workshop, which I attended, and at the end of this workshop, I asked her about buying some of her essence stock bottles, so that I could make up my own essence blends, using her essences.

Her “New Perception Essences” comprised a total of 70 stock bottles, in three sets, and she had a complete spare set with her, of all 70 bottles. Although I was very short of money at this time, I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to buy all 70 bottles, to make a full commitment to working with the flower essences that I obviously had a very great affinity with. It was a decision that I never ever regretted, and with hindsight it was a major turning-point for me.

To be continued, very soon, so watch this space!

As an “aside” from this story, you might like to read the section in the “New Millennium Essences Users Manual” that describes how I came to start making essences of my own.

As a further “aside” from this story, you might also like to read a “flashback” about some of the events that led up to this point.  In 1998, six years after the events described here, I sat down on a rainy Saturday morning in October and began writing.....

Three weeks later, I had produced, primarily for the purpose of self-therapy, ninety pages that describe many of the experiences that shaped my life up until that time.  I will be interweaving parts of this 1998 version of  “My Story” into this present (2002) narrative.
