The issue of one's self-worth in regard to one's standard of performance in the
traditional gender roles within our society is a big issue for many women, and men
too. Society has changed so much from when everybody just slotted in to these
traditional roles of the mother, the father, etc, and many of us have been cast adrift,
searching for a new sense of identity and self-worth. Some people would like to turn
the clock back and force everyone to comply with the old standards and what they
perceive to be the “correct values”, and some would like to totally abolish all the old
roles and introduce a “brave new order”. I believe that the challenge for us now is
to transcend the difficulties, meet the challenges, and learn to become fully functional
and healthy in all aspects of our womanhood and manhood.
